It was to train with greater purpose.

April became the first full month in which the lessons from our opening simulation could influence the programme. Running had to become more economical. Strength had to support HYROX performance. Simulations had to teach pacing rather than merely create fatigue.

The Focus of the Month

The central idea was simple:

Improve running without allowing running to destroy the rest of the week.

The developing weekly model combined:

Zone 2 running

one quality running session

one lighter and one more substantial strength session

recovery

HYROX-specific work

What is clear is that we were moving away from isolated hard workouts and toward a system.

Key Training Sessions

Zone 2 Running

Zone 2 running became a central tool because Espoo had exposed the cost of an insufficiently efficient aerobic base.

The goal was not impressive pace. It was controlled heart rate, conversational breathing, and the ability to recover in time for the next important session.

Controlled Running Intervals

The quality sessions gradually took the form of longer repeatable intervals rather than short maximal efforts.

Later blocks used structures such as:

3 × 8 minutes

2 × 10 minutes plus 1 × 8 minutes

progressive controlled speeds

Functional Strength

Strength work increasingly favoured movements with direct HYROX value:

unilateral leg work

posterior-chain strength

pressing and pulling

core stability

movements that supported lunges, carries, rowing, and SkiErg

The intention was not gym performance for its own sake. Strength had to improve durability and movement quality during a long mixed-modality event.

What the Data Told Us

What the training discussions do show is a change in decision-making. We began distinguishing between:

hard sessions and useful sessions

planned effort and actual recovery status

general fitness and HYROX-specific ability

That distinction became increasingly important later in the season.

What Went Well

April’s main success was consistency of purpose.

We had a clear reason for each type of session:

Zone 2 for aerobic development

intervals for sustainable speed

strength for durability

simulations for race skill

recovery for adaptation

This sounds obvious, but after a first event it is easy to react emotionally and simply add more intensity. We tried to avoid that.

Challenges and Adjustments

The main challenge was that ambition could easily turn controlled sessions into tests.

This pattern would appear repeatedly later: when running felt good, there was a temptation to increase speed beyond the planned intensity.

Training data only becomes useful if it changes behaviour. April began teaching us that discipline sometimes means keeping a good session controlled.

Another challenge was translating race movements into ordinary gym environments. The solution was not to abandon specificity but to find sensible substitutes.

The Sisu Moment

There is no single fully documented April session that can honestly be presented as the month’s defining dramatic moment.

Instead, the Sisu Moment was the decision to keep following the process after the excitement of Espoo had faded.

Consistency in an ordinary week is less visible than a finish-line photo. It is also where most progress is built.

What We Learned

Every session needs a clear purpose.

Easy training must remain easy enough to support quality.

Running development requires patience.

Strength should transfer to race demands.

Consistency matters more than post-race enthusiasm.

Looking Ahead

May would be the next opportunity to test whether the emerging structure could become sustainable.

The under-70 target remained distant, but the programme was beginning to address the right questions.

Final Thoughts

April was not defined by a race or a breakthrough.

It was defined by the quieter work of building a system we could continue to trust.

DrivenBySISU
Built on consistency.
